  The pump laser development within MIRSURG will be focused on sources operating near 1 and 2 µm. However, concerning the generation of trains of ps pulses, the activities will be in the 1 µm range only, because no passive mode-locking has so far been achieved for 2 µm bulk lasers. In contrast, Q-switched lasers will be developed only for the 2 µm range since near 1 µm one can rely on commercial technology for this purpose.
