The proposed consortium comprises laboratories
with extensive experience and international recognition, complementary
expertise and interests, and strategic aims in the field of photonics
(including nonlinear optics, materials research, laser and frequency
conversion sources, semiconductor optical technology, fiber technology,
spectroscopy and instrumentation), all focused to advance mid-IR
science and technology well beyond the current boundaries.
The consortium is further strengthened by the participation
of an industrial partner who is a global leader in the field of
semiconductor optical technology (TRT), three ambitious SMEs dedicated
to laser device and frequency conversion technology, as well as
a medical clinic which will undertake the trials on the application
of the developed sources to human surgery. The role of the clinic
will not only entail validation of applicability of the developed
sources to tissue ablation in the later stages of the project, but
will be also to provide advice to the whole consortium throughout
the entire work programme on the wide range of issues relating to
the optimum laser parameters and characteristics for clinical surgery.
